![]() The birth rate in the USSR will remain low unless there is a change in the social structure. As a rule, the better educated these women are, the fewer children they will bear. ![]() Reasons for this are: 1) the number of divorces has increased, with a remarriage rate of only 50% 2) abortions have become more available 3) there has been a drop in the number of families with several children and 4) Russian women are becoming more edcated. This rate is declining for every age group. Many postwar mothers had worked in factories during World War II but gave up their jobs in. Another reason is the change in the childbearing rate of Russian women. Motherhood became the chief occupation of postwar American women. The reason which most historians believe is the cause of the baby boom is that the majority of people were postponing having a family until they knew they were. From 1970 to 1980, this age group grew because of the baby boom following the war. One fact is that the best childbearing ages are 20-29, and from 1960 to 1970, this age group declined due to the low birth rate during World War II. The cohort born during the post-World War II baby boom in the United States, referred to as the baby boomers, has been driving change in the age structure. And television, little more than a novelty before the war, soon made it. This column argues that although much attention has focused on this boom, fertility rates preceding it were abnormally low. The baby boom more than 76 million kids born between 19offered them record numbers of potential customers. There are 2 major reasons for these changes. Between the early 1940s and the late 1960s, the secular decline in fertility that started at the turn of the 19th century in most developed countries was interrupted by a massive baby-boom. The rate started to go up in the 1970s and at present it is fluctuating at a low level. In the 1950s, the rate was relatively stable, but it declined rapidly in the 1960s and reached a record low in the late 1960s. Statistics show that immediately after the war, there was a short period with a high birth rate, after which the curve started to go down. People born during this time are commonly called baby. Changes in the birth rate in the USSR following World War II were studied in an effort to determine why such changes came about. This dramatic increase in childbirth, which took placed between 1946-1964, is called the baby boom.
